Our History

Ellery Baptist Church was founded in 1814 by Rev. Asa Turner, a veteran of the Revolutionary War. The Church was originally named the First Baptist Church of Christ of Ellery. It had 9 founding members and met in people’s homes until 1830 when a log meeting house was erected. The current building was built in 1862 for $2,000 and did not have electricity until 1934. In 1889 the church changed its name to Ellery Baptist Church.

Over the years the property has gone through many renovations including the purchase of the adjoining lot in 1973 and the addition of the basement in 1976. Most recently, the foyer was built onto the front of the church in 2011.

For well over 200 years Ellery Baptist Church has brought the good news of Jesus to this little community, the surrounding area and around the world though its many missionaries. That is a heritage that we are proud to continue. Although we love our old building we realize that the building is not the church, it is the people. And while the methods of communicating have adapted over the last two centuries, the message has remained the same.
